My orchids also have large scales problem.<br />
Recently I found time and effort to fix it.<br />
<br />
Re-potting orchids brought some joy and some problems - some of them almost have to roots.<br />
At least I started to number them and make records. <br />
<br />
<br />

Phalaenopsis orchid #5 is big, with huge green leaves and no roots, <br />

There is a portable hospital for sick orchids - old fish tank. Broken old clay pots on the bottom, followed with perlite, aragonite and sphagnum moss.<br />
<br />
The weather is wet and humidity in room is 50%, temp +19C. I think it is low for sick orchids. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitzCYZ9QNe9sQnZz6U3s_oaSQaOhHpychnQNGpC6FDMW9V6hNyBa2c0s0VQ22lzYpzBO_Xk22tNhoWli6aKfxOZIVOtlhcs16M6cbw8HQ7ulcdUB9cZ0lKXf7FZvQntPhDrqJBedbBb1E/s1600/DSC_0544.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitzCYZ9QNe9sQnZz6U3s_oaSQaOhHpychnQNGpC6FDMW9V6hNyBa2c0s0VQ22lzYpzBO_Xk22tNhoWli6aKfxOZIVOtlhcs16M6cbw8HQ7ulcdUB9cZ0lKXf7FZvQntPhDrqJBedbBb1E/s320/DSC_0544.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I added warm water to the bottom of the tank, put a mug with boiling water, misted the moss with warm water, added clear plastic sheet on the top with 2 lamps - one daylight and one - regular to add warms. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCB0jIQynQJJlo5Lr9zO3WbCQuGUs8pvMKIjHvZbW1EAggWm_JXCnzDv9kkG_bCNWjEOm1_0L-WXZK0edFIRMscWD-BGrSVR0FkfsCocBTHrrqf8GMK_TcYN-r-RgFMrBmM7xszcoejBI/s1600/DSC_0208.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCB0jIQynQJJlo5Lr9zO3WbCQuGUs8pvMKIjHvZbW1EAggWm_JXCnzDv9kkG_bCNWjEOm1_0L-WXZK0edFIRMscWD-BGrSVR0FkfsCocBTHrrqf8GMK_TcYN-r-RgFMrBmM7xszcoejBI/s320/DSC_0208.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Moving raised beds, added compost, limestone.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I rearrange all the beds from north to south. It is easy with bricks. And the walkways suppose to be wide, almost 30 inches. I am fighting the shade and hope the plants will not shade each other this year.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj7y-gKlPrnn3fW_MQ9xZm9x_QfY61OQvka94E-1XbcOg5mXR3yJ1EiJIo6gxq7rZd4gCpAWpKGxwfYql1JamV5xSpbqztxvuW9ZBbtWeOuiRo1iRUSG2urHohWTU5TXS9d9Ad7p7dqxM/s1600/Seedlings6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhj7y-gKlPrnn3fW_MQ9xZm9x_QfY61OQvka94E-1XbcOg5mXR3yJ1EiJIo6gxq7rZd4gCpAWpKGxwfYql1JamV5xSpbqztxvuW9ZBbtWeOuiRo1iRUSG2urHohWTU5TXS9d9Ad7p7dqxM/s320/Seedlings6.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
This year I am trying to grow "Earliana" cabbage, it suppose to be small but only in 60 days.... <br />
I checked the reviews, mostly all of them about poor germination, so I
seeded a lot of seeds in one pot to check. I believe 100%of them
germinated.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE7nMvSH28wyM9ACkURUJH846tMaK9xbjin9OSXGBWDufUazCzrGy9TcklYB0pJbh1N4E921u8VZgDMypX40t9U6Got0FuW8cKTT7SLFuY3r0uRwRVHFm9v0dYp_QOK-Ny0laYaObLvl4/s1600/Seedlings1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="283" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE7nMvSH28wyM9ACkURUJH846tMaK9xbjin9OSXGBWDufUazCzrGy9TcklYB0pJbh1N4E921u8VZgDMypX40t9U6Got0FuW8cKTT7SLFuY3r0uRwRVHFm9v0dYp_QOK-Ny0laYaObLvl4/s320/Seedlings1.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
So I put them individual cups. I also sprinkled some if the DE on top of the soil mix to fight gnats, I was reading it may help.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
I am trying some new herbs from seed - there are mexican tarragon on the left and sweet marjoram on the right.<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
My peppers seeds are old, 3-4 years, and the germination is very poor, at least I can see some of the hot peppers coming out.<br />

And today it is snowing again with possible freezing rain after.<br />
I am really affected by weather - long winter makes me feel blue. My be I need more vitamin D or as I called it "phitotherapy" - working in the garden, I missed it!<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxeryQujMm2Resd4RasTDY0opg0JnNinQogOS3ayxTcblOlu76SPBFuYkJrGC_MX2iX-FIo0CG7t_BnN2km81Fqzh6RZLih6fVadgNfaMocEFTX7Uk8K45ZFRog2XgoQFwgE6vG8sMf7Q/s1600/DSC_0591.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxeryQujMm2Resd4RasTDY0opg0JnNinQogOS3ayxTcblOlu76SPBFuYkJrGC_MX2iX-FIo0CG7t_BnN2km81Fqzh6RZLih6fVadgNfaMocEFTX7Uk8K45ZFRog2XgoQFwgE6vG8sMf7Q/s320/DSC_0591.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
"Clean up" - I want everything to be neat and clean, but as always......<br />
and I want to try Mittleider garden method this year.<br />
I have couple reasons -my garden is in a wooden area, a lot of shade, and I need a productive method. Fist I tried to add more beds space and made a walks very narrow.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxzq3L37wbt5fQ4Pj6xzPKVxlH6LaWnS4hUTCrdIYVIw3C46QIZHPHouO2Gzh0XG_NRafVrvhObAoDh7VUatbwxb8STgT8HPAeqSANtbPSebkor6KepuDr9TiDBsObV7lrLMrmM1alzJo/s1600/DSC_0592.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxzq3L37wbt5fQ4Pj6xzPKVxlH6LaWnS4hUTCrdIYVIw3C46QIZHPHouO2Gzh0XG_NRafVrvhObAoDh7VUatbwxb8STgT8HPAeqSANtbPSebkor6KepuDr9TiDBsObV7lrLMrmM1alzJo/s320/DSC_0592.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
The more garden space I was thinking, the better! But the shade from tall plants was horrible for other beds, so I desided to make the beds about 60-70cm (24-28 inches) and the rows between almost the same.<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy9a2_6FPdBTrfxUB1ukgrC0mizdbqkDUbpXE3RtU0REI5BxIoVUigMkTRkXXLGbLWKncbSu0irUz3nSnQ6P6_u9-Myjr4oP0sYP1nH7DUyqjC9qhX8JshQ5Z6XXslq9htxAklo3FHWBU/s1600/DSC_0596.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy9a2_6FPdBTrfxUB1ukgrC0mizdbqkDUbpXE3RtU0REI5BxIoVUigMkTRkXXLGbLWKncbSu0irUz3nSnQ6P6_u9-Myjr4oP0sYP1nH7DUyqjC9qhX8JshQ5Z6XXslq9htxAklo3FHWBU/s320/DSC_0596.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />

<br />
<br />
I will rearrange from north to south. (north-north-east to south-south-west).<br />
<br />
These are 2 cleaned beds - asparagus on the back (cleaned, compost added, fertilized) and a new one for green peas.<br />

<br />
<br />
I was very concerned about my new greenhouse film, I was able to cover my greenhouse only this November and we got only 3-4 snowfalls this winter. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5SYY75ptd_UHRVlBh67CqVoEgeJDXw3xAki-dKy4bkOcpYmqMNx1d6UzXR2VAlTVReqjErG38FVgXfz4YTK_AkKyhjBDC-UVRXlb1ou4o8cF4BA4Btw_8C7YBUTSsAOkpNuw3eRzErrQ/s1600/DSC_0399.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5SYY75ptd_UHRVlBh67CqVoEgeJDXw3xAki-dKy4bkOcpYmqMNx1d6UzXR2VAlTVReqjErG38FVgXfz4YTK_AkKyhjBDC-UVRXlb1ou4o8cF4BA4Btw_8C7YBUTSsAOkpNuw3eRzErrQ/s320/DSC_0399.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I got the sheeting from greenhousemegastore.com, this is not a household plastic, and suppose to hold more pressure, but I still do not know how long it may last.<br />
<br />
This morning I came outside to make some photos of ice and snow on the film - there is solid 1 inch ice cover on the roof.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5w8MxPLDwyeYLctNCGfz5943NZABUl-Ua1bl5FYe0-YOYX41dXdSaj8Z_asC1SpVcPyr6fDa_ImtbMsdTnPuHe598Yh1oFa5sRslRpZIXQLq7M7RnEJJZD3J257EwVTvjJRuJrpEm8cQ/s1600/DSC_0400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg5w8MxPLDwyeYLctNCGfz5943NZABUl-Ua1bl5FYe0-YOYX41dXdSaj8Z_asC1SpVcPyr6fDa_ImtbMsdTnPuHe598Yh1oFa5sRslRpZIXQLq7M7RnEJJZD3J257EwVTvjJRuJrpEm8cQ/s320/DSC_0400.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
The temperature inside was even lower than outside, and the plastic were covered with thin ice too.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx4G5_bNENH8L548oew2DPxsiNY8tRTxfD8GFjxipFxTvDcKC0WQCLOqjm0KkGRGLVHw2ixpeNTFzRSAIyo3_A4Mk6-rVKXyJAc2QSbb1L54BBasixFVq86AxBSTPgFkfbJAQ_Bocfdnk/s1600/DSC_0401.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgx4G5_bNENH8L548oew2DPxsiNY8tRTxfD8GFjxipFxTvDcKC0WQCLOqjm0KkGRGLVHw2ixpeNTFzRSAIyo3_A4Mk6-rVKXyJAc2QSbb1L54BBasixFVq86AxBSTPgFkfbJAQ_Bocfdnk/s320/DSC_0401.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
I tried to gently shake the plastic to make the ice slide down, from the lowest square. I totally have the roof divided to 4 squares.<br />
<br />
<br />
The roof itself is 24 feet long and about 6 feet on the side. My greenhouse stands on the slope and the walls are 4 feet on front and 6 feet on the back. I can barely reach the top on the back with my broom. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The greens - Asian tat soi is pretty healthy under the row cover.<br />

Tansies are mainly perennial herbs, ones you plant them and the next years you will treat them as weeds.<br />
<br />
I planted mine a year ago, in front of the garden <br />
(my mistake), yes, it is invasive, but beautiful and very good for bees.<br />
And yes, it smells! "Shoo-Fly"! More than 6 feet, very strong, health plant, no matter how much I pruned it.<br />
<br />
<br />

I am going to
make a strong anti-parasitic tea, also using wormwood, black walnut hulls,
and cloves.<br />
<br />
I have enough to make a tincture too. It can be used while fasting to expel worms, especially round
and thread. It is also valuable for treating hysteria and kidney
weakness. It has also been used to promote menstruation. Tansy has
shown to be helpful in treating gout and epilepsy. It has been
thought to relieve the pain of sprains, bruises, blemishes,
scabies, and pain of rheumatic joints. Tansy is very effective
for relieving the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis. <br />
I have arthritis problem so I will try this tincture this fall.<br />
<br />
Remember, tansy is a very strong herb and may be poisons.SunnyBeachJewelryGardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04683568097864626093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5695059364089993164.post-51834283296721364112015-08-17T07:37:00.002-04:002015-08-17T07:37:20.265-04:00Harvest Monday 8/17/2015Very slowly this year my tomatoes are getting red!<br />

I was thinking about making grow bags, in a fast and inexpensive way.<br />
I have black garden fabric from Costco, it is 48" wide.<br />
<br />
Step 1. Cut a square 48x48"<br />
<br />
Step 2. Cut in half.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT-gPfAEuyfdjHPMHUxMvrKyHdpl4qS_ng6zfrfMimwyvyA_b23S8gOZfSt3tcn8wRJH3u3nrfetyPz9BefoZNCQUaH0Po18NXKfRPyAFSOxHrkXrphJI-W8UmuoEVthaJ6uXGTY8DWiw/s1600/growbags_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="190" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT-gPfAEuyfdjHPMHUxMvrKyHdpl4qS_ng6zfrfMimwyvyA_b23S8gOZfSt3tcn8wRJH3u3nrfetyPz9BefoZNCQUaH0Po18NXKfRPyAFSOxHrkXrphJI-W8UmuoEVthaJ6uXGTY8DWiw/s320/growbags_1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Step 3. Sew the rim on long side.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmSrxR6TKCDcLIUgKtQhhTt6yjT889sc_Bl1YynLB1tgHTGOz6mwaBqPME1QzT6I-jiz9dM_u07iMbYSdyAHYkvZkZQejBzEa3Cz_j1uBM9vQS4HsjbxNXxcEXZee3P-zoFmxhT8-2zNY/s1600/growbags_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmSrxR6TKCDcLIUgKtQhhTt6yjT889sc_Bl1YynLB1tgHTGOz6mwaBqPME1QzT6I-jiz9dM_u07iMbYSdyAHYkvZkZQejBzEa3Cz_j1uBM9vQS4HsjbxNXxcEXZee3P-zoFmxhT8-2zNY/s320/growbags_2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

It is a invasive perennial plant that grows all around the yard. Our lawn is organic so I'm harvesting it everywhere.<br />
We are drinking a lot of herbs tea, especially in winter and on fasting days. My husband had 42 fasting days last winter (21 on tea and 21 tea plus juices), me 8+8.<br />
Most of the herbs I grow.<br />
Plantain Tea Benefits - from <strong><a href="http://www.liveandfeel.com/articles/drink-more-plantain-tea-1948" target="_blank">liveandfeel.com -</a></strong><br />
<br />
<strong>Plantain tea</strong> is often used in the treatment of
various respiratory problems, as it acts as a mild expectorant. These
include asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, sore throats, and coughs.
Plantain tea can also be used to lower blood pressure and control sugar
blood levels.<br />
Drinking plantain tea can help you if you've got
diarrhea or dysentery. It is also used to treat irritated or bleeding
hemorrhoids, kidney and bladder problems, bleeding caused by cystitis,
and urinary tract infections.<br />

<b> Lemon balm</b>, or Melissa officinalis,<i><b> </b></i>was starter 2 years ago from seeds.<br />
<br />
- from www.herbwisdom.com<br />
Lemon Balm was dedicated to the goddess Diana, and used medicinally by the Greeks some 2,000 years ago. In the Middles Ages lemon balm was used to soothe tension, to dress
wounds, and as a cure for toothache, skin eruptions, mad dog bites,
crooked necks, and sickness during pregnancy. It was even said to
prevent baldness. As a medicinal plant, lemon balm has traditionally
been employed against bronchial inflammation, earache, fever,
flatulence, headaches, high blood pressure, influenza, mood disorders,
palpitations, toothache and vomiting. A tea made from Lemon balm leaves
is said to soothe menstrual cramps and helps relieve PMS.<br />
<br />
<br />
<b>Bee balm</b>, or Monarda, Eastern Beebalm, Bergamot,
Wild Oswego Tea, Horsemint was on ,y property before I moved in. I also planted red variety to the purple one. <br />

from http://altnature.com - Bee Balm leaves and flowers and stems are used
in alternative medicine as an antiseptic,
carminative, diaphoretic, diuretic and
stimulant. An infusion is medicinal used
internally in the treatment of colds, catarrh,
headaches, and gastric disorders, to reduce low
fevers and soothe sore throat, to relieve
flatulence, nausea, menstrual pain, and
insomnia. Steam inhalation of the plant can be
used for sore throats, and bronchial catarrh
(inflammation of the mucus membrane, causing an
increased flow of mucus). Externally, it is a
medicinal application for skin eruptions and
infections. Bergamot’s distinctive aroma,
found in both the leaf and flower is wonderful
for use in potpourri.<br />

First it was simple PVC hoop-house with regular , not greenhouse plastic, wich did not survive the winter snow.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzG2w4m5X43A1TuVNFdw5dg14EbdUAa_BpObB0MrXQA2zXKStHUj_K7qGZik8s1GJk-EPbHZyVG7LClRHC5klvQE_eLe8JtgO-RwpFZHogwgKNECg5c-5-aSPPwhYtEMJwWPZ7Yy3mikg/s1600/DSC_0270.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzG2w4m5X43A1TuVNFdw5dg14EbdUAa_BpObB0MrXQA2zXKStHUj_K7qGZik8s1GJk-EPbHZyVG7LClRHC5klvQE_eLe8JtgO-RwpFZHogwgKNECg5c-5-aSPPwhYtEMJwWPZ7Yy3mikg/s320/DSC_0270.jpg" width="320" /></a>I decided to make completely new wooden greenhouse.<br />
First of all - I am not a builder and my hubby can't help me. It is in my blood how to handle the hammer, I believe -my grandparents were farmers. <br />

Greenhouse is 24 feet by 12 feet, it is also on a slope what makes me life more difficult.<br />
I was hoping to finish it before winter 2014-2015 but hurt my finger very badly so I stopped and only salad, onions and some asian greens survived there.<br />

On the very back of the GH I decided to make a tall raised bed for probably squashes or cuces. Right now there are leaves from clean-up, I will add compost and plant something.<br />
The back side is still a mess. <br />

Japanese knotweed of the left and asparagus on the right.<br />
<br />
Japanese knotweed is a common weed but also a tasty edible treat in spring.<br />
<span class="bodyclass">In the early spring, Japanese knotweed looks
like an army of nondescript fat, green, red-flecked stalks poking up
from the ground. I am not growing them, only discovered them last fall on the edge of the plot. I was using </span><span class="bodyclass">Japanese knotweed tincture</span> and ordered some dried roots for making it.<br />
Of course after I made an order, I found free plants.<br />
When the shots are young, they <span class="bodyclass">taste like rhubarb, or spinach and sorrel. </span><br />
<span class="bodyclass">I ate them raw but it also can be steamed as asparagus.</span><br />

<br />
I am growing everbering and june berring types and I do not have much sun in the garden, which may be the reason I do not have big harvest. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmS9bo-mAnJz_bJzkE2tj69C38QGoBFukH3vqKgeCnr2AEfITnAopcuUYscTuB5WuXbP7bBLZTLSW9ES-Rv5fsWWq9s98njN7ve8jMGWBRtOOhtMPwLVfVigko0dFkW5Tux8oNCWZJQa8/s1600/strawberry_ozark1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmS9bo-mAnJz_bJzkE2tj69C38QGoBFukH3vqKgeCnr2AEfITnAopcuUYscTuB5WuXbP7bBLZTLSW9ES-Rv5fsWWq9s98njN7ve8jMGWBRtOOhtMPwLVfVigko0dFkW5Tux8oNCWZJQa8/s1600/strawberry_ozark1.jpg" height="237" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
The first type of berries I got was Ozark beauty - and the plants and 3 years old now.<br />
<br />
<br />
You can see the plant inself is pretty healthy after the winter. I was covering them with oak leaves.<br />
It was a lit of snow this winter and some of plants did not survive - I see the growing point is rotting and 3-4 plants so I have to remove them.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Last year I planted 3 more bareroot types - 1. Honeoye<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRSz5wL9nZP3YahYh7sNDN-FZtkzPev8scgWrxfm1OWtDif_yc_OBNBHDWRuxYJY2Amz6qHkIpY6-ZWB_Ds1LOmX2u-aLOticjmYV2ZWnThTbGM1886Ia_7xplyxKlgeaWRUMy6gj0aqw/s1600/strawberry1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRSz5wL9nZP3YahYh7sNDN-FZtkzPev8scgWrxfm1OWtDif_yc_OBNBHDWRuxYJY2Amz6qHkIpY6-ZWB_Ds1LOmX2u-aLOticjmYV2ZWnThTbGM1886Ia_7xplyxKlgeaWRUMy6gj0aqw/s1600/strawberry1.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a> That's how the bed was look like after the winter - plants covered with wood shaving and leaves.<br />
<br />
I did not see berries last (the first) summer. <br />
<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ_XI92XfykzIouMNHc8C1XYvg8hmwqJZsuBb4mGE4udXs9w7VsC1VDjyKjp-aCs1qEnQgvztO2Itc0ASeeVBAKz_PU5HQ_tCLYakp53VTMh7-bvNNNDH1IyD2Um7Rl5qP7MPuUNH0Q2k/s1600/strawberry_honeoye1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ_XI92XfykzIouMNHc8C1XYvg8hmwqJZsuBb4mGE4udXs9w7VsC1VDjyKjp-aCs1qEnQgvztO2Itc0ASeeVBAKz_PU5HQ_tCLYakp53VTMh7-bvNNNDH1IyD2Um7Rl5qP7MPuUNH0Q2k/s1600/strawberry_honeoye1.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
I was also surprised that some of the plants roots are out of the soil.<br />
I checked the plants, removed the old mulch, added compost to the roots and new mulch - wood shaving again.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdKRfj959KtkkNEJP15cP8CnESDmEm8yj-7svBtThskji-vyGKRqI6MF_c72oqVTjFjDP1nBRRBjV4A21f8dCP8Tn16hQzfNt8Hdzrdg5PgmMvYFO6MHfyqx_5I6AJ5FcyBjq9ebmyFqA/s1600/strawberry_honeoye2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdKRfj959KtkkNEJP15cP8CnESDmEm8yj-7svBtThskji-vyGKRqI6MF_c72oqVTjFjDP1nBRRBjV4A21f8dCP8Tn16hQzfNt8Hdzrdg5PgmMvYFO6MHfyqx_5I6AJ5FcyBjq9ebmyFqA/s1600/strawberry_honeoye2.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>

Two other types are Tristar and Tribute, everbering types - they were very productive last year.<br />

My experiment was of growing them on the black mulch. I like this idea, no weeds, but I lost 5 plants this winter. The plants were pulled out of the ground and frozen.<br />

Golden Alexandria.<br />
Small plants, with green-yellow leaves and everbering berries with very strong smell!<br />
Not so much but as a treat! <br />

The forecast says there will be very mild night and good days like 40-50F.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5wY3iBtc2YwRCiROBFYsA2yEZ6BKZFVTpIieIHAZMn5WkRZKXSGEROm0EunEdMQc2DOANAJRTflYY3T2YL7m_DciMux8BGZI_YbUsvM_wRD0kwbyRkGvZXhoCQAr_0mMUc8RO9pZMeOI/s1600/DSC_0224.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5wY3iBtc2YwRCiROBFYsA2yEZ6BKZFVTpIieIHAZMn5WkRZKXSGEROm0EunEdMQc2DOANAJRTflYY3T2YL7m_DciMux8BGZI_YbUsvM_wRD0kwbyRkGvZXhoCQAr_0mMUc8RO9pZMeOI/s1600/DSC_0224.jpg" height="212" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
So I decided to make One Good Raised Bed :)<br />
I usually have 1-2 layers of old bricks beds, but this one suppose to be a good example. I hope.<br />
<br />
Last year it was a parsnip bed, parsnips were good but short and "hairy". I checked the soil - 4 inches of good loose organic soil and than red clay with rocks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhivD672wvz2JK-ADlb0t792AOeBWquWZYO8XR8fhhuZycTHXVOTDEj1ydqsjUslg5a5kZMj6vH89VVzzVYrdYrWKvvY8vlAHju-1p0mYmH71Cqp_LtA-xge290qLeEg0_LCUepBUhZtEU/s1600/DSC_0225.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhivD672wvz2JK-ADlb0t792AOeBWquWZYO8XR8fhhuZycTHXVOTDEj1ydqsjUslg5a5kZMj6vH89VVzzVYrdYrWKvvY8vlAHju-1p0mYmH71Cqp_LtA-xge290qLeEg0_LCUepBUhZtEU/s1600/DSC_0225.jpg" height="215" width="320" /></a></div>
No miracle the roots were not able to form. (I am gardening only 3 years and couldn't make all the beds fertile).<br />
So I weeded, added lime, peat moss, "black kow", sand, urea fertilizer, 2x4 scrap woods and grid out of cord.<br />
<br />
The first transplants are - spinach, chard, salad mix and Asian mix. I also sowed radishes and more spinach. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBXOrMizs8VKqQk5PouF1Pb5w4IX-DrougV6_Q3GWpvQhrP_Wx2yI-YrTcgWAST2PO_EQFtSrp9BsI5i04_6RJ7Y6EXO3W7xefQKkmBb-IFSXf8Qo7v2pKFR5RYYrdlYKHt70tfRo31TU/s1600/DSC_0226.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBXOrMizs8VKqQk5PouF1Pb5w4IX-DrougV6_Q3GWpvQhrP_Wx2yI-YrTcgWAST2PO_EQFtSrp9BsI5i04_6RJ7Y6EXO3W7xefQKkmBb-IFSXf8Qo7v2pKFR5RYYrdlYKHt70tfRo31TU/s1600/DSC_0226.jpg" height="251" width="320" /></a></div>
On the other bed with trellis (last year tomato trellis) I transplanted green peas - Lincoln.<br />
All the plants we watered with warm water and covered with 2 sheets of row cover.<br />
<br />
I have more peas transplants and I will wait till the first rows will survive.<br />
<br />
Wishing everyone a nice spring gardening!SunnyBeachJewelryGardenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04683568097864626093noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5695059364089993164.post-34168230748853446322015-03-26T08:36:00.000-04:002015-03-26T08:36:05.972-04:00Winter 2015 Amaryllis My <span class="st">Amaryllis plants did very good job this winter, almost all of them finished blooming now, and there is my report.</span><br />
